How Mighty Mule Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

• MM371W and MM571W arm bracket fatigue. The aluminum arm bracket that connects the opener to the gate is the first thing to crack on both the 371 and 571 series, especially on gates heavier than 400 pounds or ones that catch wind in canyon neighborhoods. We replace the bracket and check the gate’s weight and hinge alignment before reinstalling, because a new bracket on a dragging gate will fail the same way in six months.
• Control board failure from power surges. The MM562 and MM572 boards don’t tolerate voltage spikes well, and Los Angeles neighborhoods with older overhead lines or frequent brownout conditions see more board failures than the manufacturer’s documentation would suggest. The symptom is a gate that opens fine but closes with a jerk at the end, or a motor that hums for a half-second after the gate stops. We reset the limits and record the exact set point in the job file.
• Remote range loss from antenna routing. Mighty Mule receivers use a short wire antenna, and if the installer tucks it inside a metal control box or runs it parallel to the power feed, range drops from 50 feet to 15. We route the antenna outside the box, away from the motor, and test range from the street and from inside a car before we call the job done.
