We replace and fabricate DoorKing gate components, brackets, hinges, and sub-frames across Los Angeles. Most welding and fabrication work on a DoorKing gate runs between $350 and $900 installed, depending on whether we’re repairing an existing weld, refabricating a hinge post, or building a new bracket to spec. Owners usually discover the problem the same way: a gate that was smooth on Monday is dragging by Friday. The motor surges, the gate grinds against the post, or one corner sags low enough to scrape the driveway. You check the opener and it’s fine. The problem is usually structural, and it usually lives at the hinge, the weldment, or the gate frame itself.
Which DoorKing Models This Applies To
DoorKing builds swing and slide gate openers that mount to steel or aluminum gate frames, and most welding and fabrication calls we run in Los Angeles involve the gate body, not the operator. The 6002, 6003, and 6100 swing operators ride on hinge geometry that has to hold true; the 9050, 9100, and 9150 slide operators pull chain along a rail that has to stay straight. The welding work happens where those systems meet the gate: hinge brackets, chain brackets, cantilever rollers, post caps, and the gate frame itself.
Identifying your part comes down to measurement, not memory. A hinge cup is either 3/4-inch or 1-inch pin diameter, weld-on or bolt-on, and the offset matters more than the brand stamp. We match by measuring the existing steel, the pin diameter, and the gate weight before we quote anything. For welded repairs on older DoorKing gates, we use OEM-spec steel dimensions and a compatible hinge kit when the original cup is too far gone to rebuild. For most residential gates, a quality aftermarket weld-on hinge with the same pin diameter and plate thickness holds up as well as the DoorKing-branded part at roughly 30 percent less, but we’ll tell you when OEM is the better call and why.
Signs Your DoorKing Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags at the latch corner. The hinge side is fine but the free end drops as the gate opens, usually because a hinge barrel has ovaled out and the pin is running on worn steel. The motor keeps pushing, but the geometry is gone.
- A clunk or snap on every open cycle. You hear it when the gate reverses direction. That’s a cracked weld flexing under load, and the crack is spreading a little every time the gate moves.
- Fresh rust bleeding from a weld joint. In Los Angeles, cars six blocks from the ocean rust faster than the ones inland. If you see rust weeping from a weld line, water got behind the coating and the weld is degrading from the inside.
- The opener alarms but the gate barely moves. The motor is fine and the limit switch is set. The gate frame has twisted or the hinge line is no longer square, so the operator sees a load it shouldn’t and shuts down.
- You can see daylight through the hinge when the gate is closed. That’s a worn pin or a hogged-out hinge barrel. It starts as a gap, then becomes a wobble, then the gate drop-checks the post every single cycle.

You can safely check the hinge pin for play, photograph the crack, and note the gate weight printed on your DoorKing opener’s data plate. That gives us a head start on the phone. What you shouldn’t do is break out a $100 flux-core welder and hope for the best if the gate itself is cracked or the hinge has pulled away from the post. A failed weld on a moving gate doesn’t fail quietly. It drops several hundred pounds of steel on a driveway, a car, or a person. Fifteen to twenty years is normal for a properly welded hinge on a residential gate in Los Angeles, with the caveat that salt air within a few miles of the coast shortens that to ten to fifteen if the steel isn’t resealed. We see original welds fail more often from improper penetration or undercut at installation than from simple age.
A cracked weld can absolutely be repaired. Most cracked welds on DoorKing gates are re-welded in place after grinding out the old material and inspecting the surrounding steel for fatigue.
