FAAC Welding & Fabrication: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Most FAAC welding and fabrication work in Los Angeles involves either re-welding a cracked gate frame at the hinge or motor mount, or fabricating a new bracket, arm, or post plate when the original has torn or twisted. We carry FAAC-compatible steel and aluminum stock on the truck, and typical welded repairs on a residential FAAC swing or slide gate run $220-$540 installed, depending on the thickness of the material and whether we’re repairing in place or fabricating a new piece. Owners usually find the problem the hard way: the gate starts dragging on one corner, the motor strains audibly, or a visible crack shows at a weld joint that finally gave out after years of wind load off the canyons.

The fix is usually a same-day call for us in most Los Angeles neighborhoods. The real question is whether the metal around the weld is still sound enough to hold, and that’s the kind of call Adrian Vance makes on-site with a grinder and a straightedge, not over the phone.

Which FAAC Models This Applies To

Welding and fabrication work applies across the FAAC lineup, but the failure points differ by model. On the S418 and S450 swing operators, the most common fabrication need is the post bracket or the gate-leaf mounting plate, which take the full torque of the operator every cycle. On the 740 and 750 slide operators, we usually see broken rack mounts or a bottom guide roller that wallowed out its bolt holes and needs a fabricated reinforcement plate behind it. The 400 Series, common on older Los Angeles driveways, tends to fail at the hinge welds on the gate leaf itself rather than at the operator.

Identifying the right part starts with the metal thickness, not the model number. A gate leaf fabricated from 14-gauge tube welds differently than one built from 1/4-inch solid bar, and FAAC operators are indifferent to the difference, but the welder isn’t. We measure the existing material with calipers before we cut anything. For OEM versus aftermarket: FAAC doesn’t manufacture the raw metal brackets most Los Angeles gates need, so this work is inherently custom. The OEM-versus-aftermarket decision on the electrical side (limit switches, capacitors, control boards) is a different conversation; for steel and aluminum, the aftermarket choice is the grade of material and the skill of the weld, not a brand stamp.

Signs Your FAAC Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

Signs Your FAAC Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
  • A visible crack at a hinge or bracket weld. This is the one owners catch first. The crack usually starts at the toe of the weld where the heat-affected zone made the base metal brittle. On a Los Angeles gate that’s been through ten summers of thermal cycling, the crack is rarely the weld itself. It’s the steel next to the weld.
  • The gate drags on one corner or scrapes the driveway. A sagging leaf means a weld has stretched or a hinge plate has shifted. The operator keeps pushing and the gate keeps scraping, and the motor runs hotter every cycle until the thermal overload trips.
  • The operator strains audibly or faults intermittently. FAAC boards fault when current draw spikes. A binding gate from a torn bracket raises the amp draw enough to trip the board, and the owner sees a flashing error light and assumes the motor is dying. Often the motor is fine; the fabrication behind it has failed.
  • Loose or wallowed-out bolt holes at the operator mount. When the bolts start working in their holes, the operator walks slightly with each cycle. That movement flexes the bracket and propagates cracks outward from the holes. The fix is a fabricated plate with properly sized holes, not bigger bolts.
  • Rust weeping from a joint that used to be clean. Water gets into a cracked weld and sits there, and coastal Los Angeles air does the rest. If you see a rust stain running down from a weld line, the crack was there long before the stain was.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the working price picture for FAAC welding and fabrication across Los Angeles:

  • Cracked weld repair, in place: $180-$320. Includes grinding out the bad weld, re-welding, and a gusset if the design calls for one.
  • Fabricated post bracket or motor mount plate (steel): $220-$420. Includes cutting, drilling, welding, and finishing to match the existing install.
  • Fabricated gate leaf reinforcement (cracked frame repair): $260-$540. Includes material, welding, and re-hanging the leaf so it swings true.
  • Aluminum fabrication (when the original is aluminum): $300-$600. Aluminum wants TIG work and more prep; it’s a different animal than steel.

The price is written and handed over before we strike an arc. Every fabrication job includes a photo record of the failed part, the new weld, and the finished work. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the weld and the fabricated part: if a weld we made cracks within a year, we come back and make it right, no charge and no argument.

There’s a safety line here, and it’s drawn at the welding itself. You can safely inspect the brackets and welds with a flashlight, and you can safely support a dragging gate leaf with a block while you wait for service. You should not attempt to grind and re-weld a structural bracket on a powered gate. A weld that looks solid but lacks penetration will fail suddenly under load, and a gate leaf falling or swinging unexpectedly can injure whoever is under it. We’ve also seen DIY welds on FAAC operator mounts where the heat cooked the limit switch housing two inches away. The damage went from a $280 fabrication job to a full operator replacement.

If you’re in Los Angeles and the crack is visible, call (213) 674-2473. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a reinforcement job or a replace-the-leaf job, and the written price comes before any work starts.
